FAQ

Frequently asked questions

Answers to common calculation and tax-rate questions.

1

How do I calculate the price after a discount?

Multiply the original price by 1 minus the discount rate as a decimal. For 20% off 100, calculate 100 × 0.80 = 80.

2

How do I find the original price before a discount?

Divide the final price by 1 minus the discount rate as a decimal. If an item costs 80 after 20% off, 80 ÷ 0.80 = 100.

3

How do I calculate the discount percentage?

Subtract the final price from the original price, divide the saving by the original price, then multiply by 100.

4

How do I calculate the amount saved?

Subtract the final price from the original price, or multiply the original price by the discount percentage divided by 100.

5

Does the calculator include sales tax?

No. It calculates the merchandise discount only. Use the sales tax calculator afterward when tax applies to the discounted selling price.

6

Can the final price be zero?

Yes. A 100% discount produces a final price of zero. Some reverse calculations cannot determine a unique original price from a zero final price and 100% discount.
