Calculate with confidence
Clear formulas, practical results, and the right calculation for the price you have.
Add sales tax
Tax equals the taxable price multiplied by the applicable rate. Total price equals the taxable price plus tax.
Reverse a receipt total
When the total already includes tax, divide by (1 + rate) to recover the pre-tax amount instead of simply subtracting the percentage.
Use the transaction rate
US rates can combine state and local taxes; Canadian rates depend on province and may combine GST, HST, PST, or QST.

Frequently asked questions
Answers to common calculation and tax-rate questions.
How do I calculate sales tax?
Multiply the taxable price by the sales tax rate as a decimal, then add that tax to the price.
How do I remove sales tax from a total?
Divide the tax-inclusive total by 1 plus the tax rate as a decimal. Subtracting the rate directly gives the wrong answer.
Why is there no single US sales tax rate?
US sales tax may include state, county, city, and special-district rates. Enter the combined rate that applies to the transaction.
Are Canadian provincial taxes included?
The presets use current combined general rates. Product exemptions and zero-rated supplies can differ.
Why can a receipt differ by a cent?
Merchants and tax authorities may round per item, per tax component, or on the invoice total.
Is this tax advice?
No. It is an estimate. Confirm taxability, exemptions, place-of-supply rules, and current local rates with the relevant authority.
